In my 1970s/1980s period in West Germany.....I did the night train experience several times.
It was an era where you could board a train in Frankfurt around midnight, and arrive around 6 AM in Hamburg or Munich. You could leave your bag in your cabin and not worry about theft. You could sip a beer in the dining car. It was for all practical purposes....a unique experience.
Somewhere around 2010....the numbers were dwindling and in 2016....the Bahn folks killed off the night train deal.
2021 marked the return of the night train....at least on a couple of routes. Doing this in the Covid era? It has risks.....but if you were going to Hamburg and wanted lesser contact with people (like at airports)....the train makes more sense.
