EU-Germany Story

Over the weekend, it was quietly announced (more of a page four story) that the EU had a meeting and 15 of the members agreed last week to take around 38k Afghan folks.

The German number?  The news media says 25,000.  The other 14 members took fairly less numbers.

A lot of coalition or news chatter about this effort?  I would doubt it.  There are a couple of state elections in 2022, and you really don't want to stir up the negative sentiment on the far right.  That was Merkel's 'mistake' in the 2013-to-2016 era, which opened the door for the AfD Party to take a fair number of voters.

As for the number?  Lets be fair and admit before the 2013-to-2015 period....the average number of incoming migrants/asylum seekers....was around 200k to 250k per year generally accepted.  The 'system' is built to handle that number on the incoming side.

What made the program prior to 2013 work?  You generally walked into a German consulate in your home-country....filled out the 20-odd pages of forms....provided an ID...had a background check done, and then waited two or three months to be evaluated.  If accepted....you flew from that country into Frankfurt.  If denied....you might have waited a year and re-submitted again.

The 'old' way of business?  If you had zero job skills....no German language ability....or showed a lack of character, then you probably didn't get an approved entry form.

My humble guess is that by the end of 2022.....another 20-odd thousand will be put up to the German entry system....quietly of course.
