In this central region of Germany (around Frankfurt-Wiesbaden)....we have two places that people want to drive up to....when it snows.
On the map....about an hour's drive (in the summer) NE of Frankfurt is the Wasserkuppe. It's a ski area (at least when you get a decent snow). But the hour's drive suggestion doesn't work in December.....it might take you two to three hours....depending on snowplows, traffic and time of day.
The second place is Feldberg (about an hour's drive NW of Frankfurt). No ski operations, but a magnificent view for miles. Getting there in the winter? Another hectic event and it could take you two hours to get there.
Locally, some folks have begun to grumble about the drive to reach each destination.
Both are in locations where you could put up a cable-car but no one seems to have interest.
