Over the past 48 hours, this story has unfolded at the German-Czech border....near Cerchov. On Sunday afternoon....this German family had a 'outing', where three kids walked off.
The daughter (8), her brother (6), and a cousin (9).
The family eventually went looking and found the brother and cousin....the daughter, as of this morning (Tuesday) is still missing.
Area description? Its your typical rural area....heavily forested. It's surrounded on all four sides by a major two-lane road. The size? Roughly 6 x 15 km. Paths or trails throughout the whole area? Yes, but literally hundreds of paths.
So if you were in the middle and just kept walking in a straight line? For an average person, in 3 hours, you'd easily reach 'civilization' (the highways).
News folks say over 800 folks are out there and searching the trails on Monday.
Going against the odds? It's mid-October, and the local temperatures at night will be around 5 C.
Having walked a ton of trails in Germany over the past forty-odd years, I can say that the trails and paths go off in various directions and unless you carry a compass/map with you....you could end up easily lost. But even without a compass/map.....if you just reached a point of doing a straight line and finding a highway....you can get out of the lost situation fairly quickly (probably in 3 hours or less).
No one teaches these little tracking skills to kids though.
UPDATE: Tuesday, the kid was found. Safe, a bit chilled.
