Really Screwed-Up Election in Berlin?

 Oh yeah.

This came up late yesterday, and RBB (public TV in Berlin was talking about the mess).

So when they were talking about invalid votes....they didn't tell the cause.

What RBB says is that underage voters participated in various poll stations.  Normally, for a federal election....ONLY teens who are 18 or over can vote.  So there's this evidence that kids between 16 and 18 voted.

Legally, in local district/city elections (for mayor or district city council)....youth voting (to age 16) is allowed.

How many voted?  Right now....the officials suggest a handful, but the investigation continues.

Non-Germans having voted?  Well....that's now being reviewed and the suggestion is that EU-nationals....meaning people from Poland or Spain....also voted in some cases.  Illegal? Yes.

All leading to a massive investigation?  I'd suggest that it'll take six months to really clear the facts of the case, and it leads mostly back to untrained or marginally trained people at various poll stations.

Another election?  If you look at social media chatter....locals in Berlin want a full accounting of the mess, but it's hard to find any city official who wants to mount a new election.  Part of this would revolve around fixing issues, and training people....so to suggest that you could have another election in 30 days?  NO, that would clearly be impossible.  I'd go and suggest a 90 day period before you could be assured of people being trained, and the system ready to function (as advertised).

Trust factor?  The bulk of poll stations in the city (2k-plus) ran as advertised.  It's roughly a hundred stations with this 'problem'.  They did the best they could....under the circumstances.  Any dead people voting?  No, and that's at least a positive thing you could say.
