Well...I always translate it as the 'executive-committee' of the CDU Party (Merkel's group). But the true translation is the 'national board of the CDU Party'.
Membership? It consists of the CDU Party 'boss', the party General Secretary, 4 deputy folks, a treasurer, some honorary chairs (usually retired members of the party), In this case, the President/VP of the Bundestag also sit on the group (if they are CDU members), along with the head of the CSU faction. Then you have people who are the CDU state party 'players'. Even major players in the EU situation, who are CDU party members....get a seat on the committee.
Total? In the range of 40 to 50 members.
So, I should bring up this minor news item. There's some talk this weekend by lesser folks (not members of the group)....that they responsible for the screw-up of the CDU 'losing' in the election, and that they should all resign.I expect for most of the upcoming week, this will be one of the five most discussed items in the news.
What happens if half of them agree, and they open up the committee for a vast number of new members (younger and probably adding a dozen women to the mix)? A rebuilding process.....probably taking four years.
The idea by some of the Präsidium sticking around and trying to get 'boss' jobs out of this? I might see five to ten attempting this, and no one taking them serious.
