If you watch any of the German news networks this afternoon.....two major CDU members are giving their intention to step down and away from politics: Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (AKK) and Minister of Economics Pete Altmaier.
Big deal?
AKK was brought to Berlin the last four years to be Merkel's hand-picked replacement....which went down a pretty crappy path, and she shed the party-boss job along the way. If you were looking for a carbon-copy of Merkel....she was it.
Among the top women of the CDU....I'd rank her in the top three presently, and she's around age 59.
As for Altmaier? He's 63, and health-wise, he's had some minor issues over the past year. If you were looking for a good debate 'artist'....he's in the top five of the CDU.
Some people (over the past week), have suggested that several of the older members of the CDU need to step down, and allow a whole new generation to engage. This might be the beginning of a dozen-odd retirements.
