Around four weeks ago, most urbanized cities gave the approval for Christmas markets to be organized and functional (likely to start around the last three days of November.
If you go into Wiesbaden, there's various structures being brought to the mid-town area and it'd go into full-scale assembly over the next ten days.
Well....this morning, the Premier-President of Saxony (a CDU guy) stood up and said it's time to cancel the Christmas market business because of Covid.
A federal or state or city matter? Well....the Bundestag (national folks) probably don't want to be the 'bad' guy and order a national cancellation. Most city mayors/city councils....also want to be relieved of the responsibility. So I'm guessing the sixteen states will gather and discuss the matter.
How much will this peeve the public? The epidemic was supposed to end 25 November. Presently? The infection rate (as of last night) was the highest ever (since day one). The vaccination business? It appears to have had marginal success.
Adding to this....literally tens of thousands of clubs and artists have done 'footwork' to prepare for this Christmas market business. They want to pursue the plan.
If they do cancel the market business....some folks will start to ask questions about Christmas 2022, and if the same trend will follow.
Acceptance of this? It just lays down the path of a shutdown....probably in four to six weeks.

I you cancel the Christmas markets then they win. Don't roll over play hard ball.
I'm generally split on this issue. Prior to Covid era, this was a pretty crowded event for Fri/Sat evenings, and in one single night...with one guy coughing, you could infect forty people easily. Other issue, they can mandate the mask business just to run this...but since food and drink are going on...you have the mask down, so if the 'bugs' were in the air...you'd put your odds higher on getting the virus.
Second, if they had this in a more spacious area, with less crowds...it'd be a more safe event. But they won't go in that direction.
In the past seven days, huge turn on infection rate (hospitalizations going up as well). Infection rate is now highest ever (since day one), and it'll likely double in the next two to three weeks. Some areas of Bavaria are freaking out.
Big issue...do we just all admit that from this point on (for next decade)...you have to shut down things in the winter months? Or do you just rough your way through?
Good grief, I never thought I'd see the German people roll over and allow this medical tyranny. If you keep complying, the government will continue to lock you down at will, for "your health".Covid is just a super-flu bug and will always be around. Do you always want to be locked down?
I would suggest three things driving the thinking presently.
1. They (bulk of society) got convinced by various Dr Dooms and politicians that if we just got two-thirds of society vaxxed-up...herd immunity would kick in (spoken throughout late 2020). Here we are...in the past four weeks, it's surged from a mild number to a all-time daily record, and in various areas...the hospital quarantine wards are full. The imaginary lessening of the spread simply isn't there.
2. They've done shutdown twice now, and I'd assume around half of the population and most politicians figure shutdown is a swell tool. If you peel off the corners of the economy...various sectors are marginally existing (Lufthansa was about to bring another wave of its employees back to work). On the last attempt to force curfew...police will admit that public patience is limited.
3. Finally, all these public TV forums hype the virus business. Blame needs to get assigned is top priority. If you followed both Channel One/Two, there's probably eight hours a week now with some type of Covid-chatter. People who watch this...are getting full-scale 'fear-porn'. Most react....'you-gotta-do-something' mentality is full scale now.
