I sat and watched a German N-TV piece today, which concerned the Russia-Ukraine business.
So to put this simply.....the Russians run state-companies. In the past week or two....the Russians have decided to downsize the state-companies. We aren't saying 10 or 20 percent....just minor numbers of employees.
What becomes of the employees?
Well...they are kept on the payroll-level, and sent to 'military retraining' (I guess you'd call it basic-refresher training). Same pay....guarantee of not being sent to the front, and the company survives with lesser employees.
The comments indicate that they'd end up at depot locations where 'broken' hardware from the war....would be brought in, and these guys would repair the hardware.
The quickness of this deal? One Russian guy described the situation....saying some government guy arrived at the company one day, and the papers to 'retrain' were issued the 2nd day. By the 3rd day, they were on a bus for 'retraining'.
What's going on? I would suggest two things.
First, there's an enormous amount of equipment....from tanks to rifles, which have been worn out. The Russians simply never had the depot-repair capability to handle this....on a quick basis. So it would make sense to draft a couple thousand guys to fill this 'need'. Most all of these folks are people who did conscription back ten to thirty years ago (the age in this group of 'draftees' is 18 to 60).
Second, my humble guess is that they are all low-level technicians.....mechanics....probably making in the 600 Euro a month level. Cost-wise, this is not a big deal.
NOW....if sixty days in the future.....some commander arrives at the depot and says in 12 hours.....you will be deploying to the front, to be the next wave.....things will go differently and fairly negative.
