Street Riot: Leipzig

This morning, ARD, provided some coverage or reporting over the Friday night riot in Leipzig.

General facts?

For about 45 minutes, somewhere between 200 and 300 protesters were having a confrontation with the city police.

What started this?  It appears to be a police action in the late part of the day over squatters who'd taken over a building there in the far south of city (Connewitz neighborhood).

For reference, there's been various issues brewing there over the past year or two....as the city sought to renovate streets, sidewalks, and improve the 'character' of the area.  The accusation of property speculation and locals disagreeing with the city plan....is part of this whole discussion.

This part of Leipzig has been a 'magnet' for college kids in the city, in terms of housing and local pubs.

Police cars were attacked in this effort....barricades put up on the streets by the protest crowd, and arrests were made (22).
