Last night, via ARD (public TV, Channel One, in Germany), the 9 PM show was the 'Hart Aber Fair' public forum (translated: Hard But Fair). I would strongly recommend a viewing.
The topic of the live show? "Sick forests, flooded valleys: Is climate protection being taken seriously now?"
You had three pro-environmental folks (one of them a teenager), a coal spokesperson, and a business/economist at Welt (the newspaper).
The angle of this discussion was mostly about the terrible woes coming and the total destruction of society from climate change.
At some point, the teenager (Carla Reemtsma, climate activist and co-organizer of the "Fridays for Future" demonstrations) got all hyped up and demanding the coal industry immediately shut down. The coal spokesperson....Sebastian Lachmann....went the opposite direction in suggesting nothing was really planned out and the people pushing this whole environmental agenda don't have the good intentions of the general public.
Reemtsama (the teenager) launched into hyped-up tirade. 'Doom and gloom' if you fail to immediately react to save the Earth.
So the reality of Germany right now?
The election wrapped up, and frankly....both the Greens and SPD government who might have signed up to some marginal promise to the "Fridays for the Future" business....are screwed. They can't form a government with the FDP Party....unless a fair amount of the promises are softened or dumped.
The anger building up right now? I'd say the "Fridays for the Future" kids are fairly upset about the direction of things. You are about to see (probably for the next four years) massive demonstrations and traffic blockages...to make their point.
But I would suggest that more and more Germans are lessening their general view of the "Fridays for the Future" kids, and adult support is probably going to be cut in half as the months go by.
Do the kids care about the economy? No. Their number one priority....in their belief system is that the Earth matters more. So they are more than willing to screw over companies, the national economy, and send tens of thousands into long-term unemployment status.
Last night's show? Probably a wake-up call.....you don't want some 19-year old kid dissolving the German economy.
