Some critic of public TV in Germany wrote a piece yesterday and asked the question....if Netflix can operate (at a profit) for a cost of 7.99 Euro a month....why do Germans pay 18.36 Euro a month for the public TV/media tax?
I sat there a while and pondered over this.
There are literally hundreds of TV shows, documentaries and movies on Netflix, which you can call up at any point to view. I would make a humble guess that out of the 7.99 Euro a month....there's probably around one Euro of that which is general profit.
The difference here in this comparison....is that Germany's public TV empire has a vast network of journalists, and they have to produce daily news pieces to fill the 'gap'.
There's also the radio show folks, who have to produce news and entertainment segments.....which change daily.
Could you downsize German public TV/radio.....and cut one-third of the cost? Yes, but you'd be laying off people with no real future job in life.
