Book Recommendation: 'The Sleepwalkers'

Around a decade ago, Christopher Clark wrote a fine book to describe the era leading up to 1914 and the beginning of the first world war.

Title: The Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went to War in 1914.

If you can find the book, I highly recommend it, and it'd be one of the dozen I'd suggest to know/understand German history.

One key point about Clark's ability to write.....he presents interesting stories, and they are always very readable.  He is an absolute German history expert....without any doubt.

The negative here.....730-odd pages, and it's a good month of reading.

I'll also say for the benefit of readers....he does cover more than the German side of the story, and lays out a good bit of European history, which most of us are lacking (from this era prior to 1914).

I enjoyed this book. Somewhat different from the usual in that it sort of assigns blame all over instead of just Germany. In nearly all the countries the decision to go to war was not unanimous. Imagine if some saner heads had prevailed.
