If you haven't been in the Bahnhof (train station) district of Frankfurt in the past ten years.....it's quiet an adventure today, with lots of petty crime, substantial drug abuse, assault on a daily basis, and a fair sum of residents in the city fed up.
So I noticed today via local Frankfurt news....the city council is entertaining the idea of a 'arms ban' in the Bahnhof 'quarter'. It would mean.....at any time....a policeman could stop you and ask for a frisk. Anything on you....considered a weapon....would get into some arrest situation.
To be honest, we have this for Wiesbaden (it was the first city in the nation) to attempt the 'stop-and-frisk' tactic. I should note....it only goes into effect in the downtown area (shopping district) after sundown.
This Frankfurt deal? It'd be in effect from 9 PM to 5 AM.
Area affected? Well....if you stood in front of the train station.....it's extended two blocks to your right, and two blocks to the left....then going forward about three blocks. Yeah....about half of the old red-light district of the city, and what has become the crappy part of Frankfurt that you want to avoid today.
Druggies accepting this? I doubt it. You'd have to have a squad of six to eight police....to handle one sweep of a city block. They simply don't have the manpower to handle that nightly. But I will say this....based off Wiesbaden's threat....if you were caught with a knife or weapon....you start getting into serious charges with the potential for a year or two in jail. Maybe that's the gimmick with the Frankfurt leadership.....put enough of folks away for a while and see what happens.
