I noticed a little brief story off N-TV (Germany's commercial news TV network) on a topic of interest to me.....bicycling.
Back forty years ago, bike speeds didn't really get discussed....mostly because folks were in the 5 to 20 kph range. But with advancements...bike speeds have gone up.
Within a village or city, there are tightly controlled car speeds, and these are meant for motorcycles, scooters, and even bicycles.
For example....on a trail or sidewalk....'walking speed' is officially the noted speed, so you could be fined 15 Euro for anything over that speed. If you went at a threatening speed and someone felt in danger? Well....that fine would be 35 Euro (1 point off your license).
N-TV noted that a fair number of bikes now are capable of reaching easily the speed of 30 to 40 km per hour. So in a 30 kph zone (very common on urban streets now), you could be ticketed.
A trend to start up? No. I doubt it.
It is very rare that the police go and monitor speeds....they use the 'blitz' cameras instead. But I would go and suggest that within Wiesbaden in an average month.....there's probably two or three bikers pulled over for excess speed and shocked that they actually do hand out tickets.
