So the way to read this....when talking about ALL deaths (not just Covid-19) from 2018 and 2020....the RED represents 2018 numbers and blue represents 2020.
The green line at the bottom of the chart (that you barely notice)? Deaths attributed to ONLY Covid-19 in 2020.
The upswing in March 2018? Flu numbers. Why didn't Covid-19 deaths show in March? Well, you can't cite any reason other than flu season in 2020 wasn't a serious deal.
Oh I do agree....if you drew a graphic on infection rates....it'd be a different story. But in this case.....death from all things, it oddly matches up to a non-Covid-19 year.
Just an odd way of review 2020 and it's real impact.

Truly a picture is better than 1000 words!! Can you provide the link to this info? I could not find among all the data at their website. Thanks!!
This person built the graph from their data. But you can review the data from https://www.destatis.de/EN/Press/2020/10/PE20_399_12621.html
This report actually covers the period 2016-2019 and 2020's Covid-year. If you go to the bottom graphic on that page, it'll discuss death comparisons...month by month, which are interesting.
Another good area to search over statistical data from the German federal effort (all press releases): https://www.destatis.de/SiteGlobals/Forms/Suche/Presse/EN/Pressesuche_Formular.html?nn=43216
