What the cops say....just gleaning from five or six different sources....across Germany, Austria and Italy.....around 3,000 cops were deployed in AM raids....searching a minimum of 100 homes.
Chief aimed group? 'Far-right terror cells'....from members of the Reichsburger 'group'.
Arrests? Right now.....25 people.
What was this all about? It seems that the Reichsburger folks were putting a 'master-plan' to overthrow the government of Germany.
Yeah, I know....pretty hard to believe that 25 would qualify as that big of a threat.
The blunt side of this story? You have some folks who are are idealists....just like the people with the anti-capitalism business, or the kids with Fridays For The Future, or the 'Last Generation' crowd.....who believe in actions to change the output/outcome of the German government. Just in this case, they believe in some Monarch-type government left over from 1918.
In this case, they had some type of firearms and (apparently) explosives....so the raid on one side of this makes sense. The necessity for 3,000 police, for 100-odd homes? I guess it makes some sense.....but if you just end up with 25 folks arrested....someone will just start shaking their head over the 'story' told.
How many Germans make up this entire movement? Back in 2017, the authorities were figuring in the 12,000 to 13,000 range....mostly men....over the age of forty. The term 'society-disadvantaged' often gets uttered here. What that means? Well....non-intellectuals.....no college....easily manipulated is implied....and generally living in some world where the Kaiser still exists in some fashion (he left in 1918, if you were wondering).
A top story for tonight's news? Absolutely...but when you figure 24,000 man-hours were used to detain/arrest 25 guys....it just begs more questions.
Note added: Some gov't folks put the figure of the movement...since Covid....up around 20,000. But since a fair amount of interest dwindled over Covid....the 20k number might not be that accurate.
I should also add this point....the monarchy angle....historically....wasn't that successful. It begs a lot of questions about reverting back to it.
