Well....after WW I.....the Ukraine was 'consumed' into the USSR. It was a funny thing what existed prior to this situation....the Ukraine was a major agricultural 'power', with private land ownership.
Once the USSR arrived...there's this collective attitude....meaning that all farms are now state property and state-run.
This simply didn't sit well.
In the end, it took enthusiasm of a rare type to fix the problem.
From the harvest of 1932, and 1933....KGB folks arrived in the Ukraine and ensured every bit of grain produced....left the country. Starvation ensued, and several million Ukrainians starved to death over a two-year period.
It's safe to say from 1934 on....there's an enormous of hatred toward communism, and Moscow dictating things.
So mid-summer of 1941....the Nazis arrive. The western half of Ukraine was mostly accepting of the Nazi situation and saw them as finally....some relief against the Moscow problem. The eastern half of Ukraine was ethnic-Russia for the most part, and weren't that happy with the Nazis.
This odd supportive position started up, with various Ukrainians participating in the war for Germany.
After the war, Ukraine reverted back to the Soviet domination, but kept this attitude about communism being a failed effort. For the Moscow crowd....this pro-Nazi thing rubbed them the wrong way, and has been a history memory ever since. It's not that the Ukrainians hate communism......they hate dictates from Moscow just as much.
In Putin's mind, this is supposed to be a life-lesson for the Ukrainian people.
