I noticed this morning, off German social media....some German guy finally asked the public question....is there any real difference between the CDU (Merkel's right-of-center party), the SPD, the Greens and the Linke Party.
Someone responded....the CDU is left-of-center, the Greens are eco-left, the SPD is 'wannabe' left, and the Linke Party is 'dictatorial' left. Naturally, this was a cynical view expressed.
Naturally, folks had a good laugh.
I think most Germans over the age of sixty would respond that there was a time when the Merkel 'team' (party) was easily identified as conservatives in nature (going back to the 1970s and 1980s. The past twenty years? They'd grin for a moment and just say in a joking manner that a lot of water (flood stage) has passed under this bridge (meaning the party).
I'd also suggest that the older generation who were enthusiasts of the SPD Party (which tended to be the working-class German political party)...would admit they haven't recognized their party in the past twenty years.
So where does all of this lead onto? I'd suggest that the Green Party can sell their brand and vision for the future easily to one out of every four German voters now. With a little bit of effort, it might even go up to one out of every three German voters.
As much as the common working-class German would like some political party that represents their feelings....the system has moved on....leaving that guy by the side of the road and wondering about things.
