The German news magazine Focus...went out and did a survey of parents, the Covid-19 era, and this down-period where schools were shut but on-line instruction was provided.
Basically three-quarters of the parents said the system had serious disadvantages.
Another factor pointed out by parents.....most schools didn't have the equipment there and ready to go, for on-line instruction.
Then the true 'insult' came....around 60-percent of parents apparently sat in on class-instruction, and came to note....the teachers just weren't that capable. The suggestion was....they weren't trained in the manner necessary to instruct.
I suspect if I'd gone to American states (those who shut down schools for 100 days or more)....I'd get the same basic numbers.
I noticed in August, as some American schools opened and were going to use on-line instruction to some degree....the schools had sent notes home to be signed....saying that the parents agreed NOT to review the class material or class-instruction. I had a good laugh at that point....it was begging for legal trouble.
So the real question here....in a Covid-ban era.....is shutting schools down and attempting on-line instruction a wise idea? I might agree....certain kids would be better off with minimal instruction, decent study materials, and just cruising at their own level/rate. Other kids would absolutely require in-person coaching and demanding teachers to perform, at any level.
Will any of this survey business get Bundestag action? I seriously doubt it. You'd be opening up a big mess and admitting that some percentage of German teachers are more like baby-sitters, than actual instructors.
