Last night via ZDF (public TV, Channel 2).....the Maybrit Illner Show came on. Public forum show....I'd rate it in the top five forums of the week. Guest? The Chancellor (Scholz, SPD Party).
So I watched about 15 minutes before I fell asleep.....the rest I viewed this AM. You can see it here.
There were three separate criticism dynamics going on: the recession, the war, and Covid. The invited guests were throwing negatives against Scholz over the popular topics.
On Covid and the frustrated nurses.....they provided financial 'relief' packages. On the recession, they provided the 9-Euro Bahn ticket and gas tax relief for 3 months. On the war, well....there's hardware going to Ukraine.
The student (Lambrecht) probably dumped the most criticism on Scholz....with climate change lurking and no one rushing to save the planet.
I would rate the chat this way:
1. No one much won. Lot of chat....but there's no bucket of money or enthusiasm to go and fix everything.
2. Scholz isn't a miracle-worker, and that's not been his work-history (years as mayor of Hamburg).
3. Most of the public is fed up with Covid. The war topic, and the recession are heavily upon their mind.
4. Finally, at 10:15 PM, there just aren't that many people fired up to watch a full hour 'downer-show' like this. If I felt negative prior to the show.....it probably dug another five meters down into the 'pit' for me by the end of the show.
Thankfully, we are at the summer 'pause' (as Germans say), and the political crew will start packing up next week....to leave for vacation (figure the next five weeks will be marginal political news). ARD/ZDF will go to a weak summer TV schedule...reruns from the past thirty years will be the prime programming. Prepare for a restful period.
