Just An Odd Church Matter

This is a page 4 type story in the German news, but it's interesting.

There is this general rule....you get the use of a church (Lutheran or Catholic) for a church wedding....as long as one of you have paid church 'taxes' through the years.  You don't pay any extra fees for use because of this tax business.

So this weekend, the German Finance Minister (Lindner, FDP) got married.  Neither he or the wife....pay German church taxes.  Yes, they got married in a church...up in Sylt (the German island).

I'll just say this....a fairly large segment of society in Germany.....by age forty....just refuse to participate in church taxes.

Did the guy probably slip the church a thousand-odd Euro for the use?  I'm guessing either he or the wife did.

I don't think it's illegal....but for the church-tax paying crowd.....they seem a bit hyped up and feeling there is some unethical business going on.
