For June, July, and August....you can buy a monthly ticket for bus/rail travel....for 9-Euro a month. The only service you can't ride? Inter-City and ICE 'fast' trains.
So there's chatter going on presently (Focus reports it)....that come September...another permanent deal will fall into play....69-Euro for a monthly 'subscription' ticket. Same deal....any bus, or normal subway/train....from any point in the country.
The value of this? Well....it's a fair discussion.
First, I could see buying it for possibly four months out of the year (summer period, and December). The cost factor is great....as long as you plan your trips around the fact that you can't use Inter-City (the faster of choices).
Second, for a retiree.....it'd be a great deal to get out of the house six to eight times a month, and go places.
Third, a normal monthly bus-pass for the Wiesbaden/Mainz area for me? That runs 89-Euro (adult). The weekly pass? That would run 26-Euro for the local region only. So this 69-Euro deal seems pretty good.
If I were 65 and wanted a 'all-Hessen' state ticket? That's running 365 for a year deal.
I'll just say that the majority of people will sign up....but they will only go for certain months out of the year....meaning a lot less profit that they expected.
